Ageing is something we all experience, but our relationship with it is often much more complicated than simply getting older. It can bring us face to face with questions about time, control, missed opportunities, changing relationships and the expectations we have carried about where we thought we “should” be by a particular stage in life.
In a recent article for the National Counselling & Psychotherapy Society, I explore some of these less obvious aspects of ageing. I look at why fear of death can sometimes be connected to feeling a loss of control elsewhere in life; the invisible timetables we create around relationships, careers, homes and families; and why the death of a difficult parent can bring not only grief, but also unexpected relief or freedom. Ultimately, I ask whether ageing well may have less to do with resisting change and more to do with becoming more flexible about what we can control, what we cannot, and which expectations we might finally be ready to let go of.
